According to his nominating teacher Alan Blayne, "Lester is definitely the most gifted, dedicated, original, and outstanding mathematics student that I have encountered in my teaching profession. His personal warmth, sense of humor, and his evident interest in getting to know all the students are important factors in nourishing our sense of community. His research is of graduate level quality."
Lester received a 100 final average in Advanced Placement AB Calculus and a top grade of 5 on the AP exam in his sophomore year. Last year as a junior, he scored a 100 final average in Advanced Placement BC Calculus and a 5 on the AP exam. His overall average is 99.67, and he scored a perfect 1600 on his SATs.
Lester did research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology last summer in the area of graph theory, and will present a "graduate level" research paper in Washington, D.C. as an Intel Finalist.
He is president of the National Honor Society, vice president of the Brainstormers Academic Quiz Bowl Team, assistant editor of the yearbook, president of the Ichtus club and Mathletes, and a member of the Spanish honor society, Cantata, chorus, and Key Club.
He also is a member of the Science Olympiads team and led the team to a second place victory at the Brookhaven National Laboratory Regional Science Bowl.
In his spare time, Lester enjoys robotics, bowling, drumming, and rock collecting and serves as a deacon of his church youth group, and vice president of the church choir. He also enjoys tutoring fellow students in mathematics, especially calculus.
Two of the first three National Calculus Awards were won by students from the same high school. Beeneet Kothari received the award in 2000.
